On Aomine Daiki

I only recently got into Tadatoshi Fujimaki's widely-popular basketball animanga series, Kuroko no Basket (aka Kuroko's Basketball, or KnB for short), when I noticed that it was available on Netflix. Knowing how popular it was among anime fans a while back (I took a hiatus from the fandom for about ten years so I'm super late coming into the series), I decided to binge on all 3 seasons and the movie in a week. ^^;; (I regret nothing.)

It's honestly hard for me to choose which character I love the most, because each is done so differently from each other and is special in his own way. However, Aomine holds a special sway over me. He is the kind of badass that is unapologetically, effortlessly amazing at what he does. That formless shooting? That agility? The league he is in when he gets into the zone? Who would not be drawn to his innate sexiness? That's why the site title I picked is an echo of the awesomeness he projects:

in·vic·tus [source]
Latin adjective, "unconquered, unsubdued, invincible."

This title is also an allusion to his catchphrase, "No one can beat me but me (俺に勝てるのは俺だけだ)". While this may sound extremely conceited, it has, for the most part, remained true in the series. It also becomes a source of angst for him: because he feels that he has reached his peak, the game he loves and is good at (and, by extension, has given him a sense of purpose) has become unchallenging, since practically all opponents he has faced were beneath his capabilities.

He does have his quirks, of course, like being obssessed with gravure idols, and being phenomenally lazy. xD (His childhood friend and keeper and club manager Momoi Satsuki often finds him sleeping on the roof of their high school, and drags him back to class or practice.) However, that is perhaps the most amazing thing about Aomine Daiki: he scores the highest points in any match without the benefit of regular training. This could be a major reason he was cut a lot of slack by Touou High captain and most of his teammates; despite the occasional delinquency, Aomine wins his games.

He is a player abounding in talent, and was dubbed as an all-around basketball prodigy when he and the Teikou Middle School team, nicknamed the Generation of Miracles, outdid all other middle school teams in their area. This led to Aomine becoming increasingly bored with basketball, because he had developed into a player so far advanced that no other player can match up to him. Only when he faces off again in high school with the Seirin duo Kagami Taiga and Kuroko Tetsuya was he able to finally meet his match, activate his hidden potential, and was eventually made to accept that winning is a team effort, not the result of an individual's ability, no matter how stellar.
